Company Overview

CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles) is a leading Spanish manufacturer of rolling stock, supplying passenger cars and urban rail vehicles to railway networks around the world. Since 2011, CAF has supported the growth and modernisation of Metro Medellín—Colombia’s only metro system, serving approximately 800,000 passengers each day.

Originally opened in 1995, Metro Medellín is now a vital part of the city’s infrastructure. To further improve its performance, CAF partnered with Weighwell to supply advanced weighing systems for use at the Medellín depot. These solutions play a key role in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the fleet.

Metro Medellín operates Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) designed for high-frequency urban travel. Each train consists of multiple carriages optimised for fast, reliable passenger service.

CAF has been instrumental in both modernising and expanding the fleet. This includes upgrading 42 three-car units—initially built in the 1990s—with new traction systems, braking components and auxiliary equipment. Since 2011, CAF has also delivered an additional 36 units to boost capacity and support rising demand.

To assist with depot maintenance, Weighwell supplied two specialist weighing systems:

1. Portable Bogie Weighing System – Designed to weigh two-axle bogies simultaneously, this system provides fast, accurate measurements that help depot teams quickly identify any load distribution issues.
2. TrackCell™ System – Installed within the existing rail infrastructure, the TrackCell™ system accommodates both 2.3m and 2.5m bogies. Used alongside a bogie press, it captures wheel load data under simulated conditions — helping rail engineers verify the weight distribution and optimise performance.

By delivering these weighing systems, Weighwell supports CAF’s long-term fleet performance goals. Our solutions help verify bogie balance, identify weight issues early and maintain the operational safety of Metro Medellín’s growing fleet.
