Company Overview
DB Cargo UK’s Crewe facility is one of the country’s key freight maintenance depots. It supports one of the largest freight locomotive fleets in the UK, providing regular servicing, overhauls, and specialised engineering for various models—including the Class 67 and Class 66.
Rail Vehicles Being Weighed
The Class 66 is a six-axle (Co-Co configuration) diesel-electric locomotive, whilst the Class 67 has a four-axle (Bo-Bo configuration), both are known for their reliability and heavy freight capabilities.
As part of the East Coast Digital Programme, DB Cargo is now upgrading many of these locomotives with the European Train Control System (ETCS). This modern signalling and control upgrade helps the fleet meet digital rail standards and supports the shift towards more automated, efficient freight operations. The Crewe depot plays a central role in this transition—supporting both the upgrade and ongoing maintenance.
Our Weighing Solution
To support DB Cargo’s maintenance and modernisation goals, we supplied a Static Weighing System capable of weighing the entire Class 66 and Class 67 locomotives in a single operation. This system supplied features six Portable Train Weigher (PTW) units, providing accurate, real-time weight measurements.
This solution enables maintenance teams to quickly detect weight imbalances, verify wheel loads and confirm compliance with safety standards—critical for locomotives fitted with new digital control systems.
