Company Overview
Hitachi Rail Italy, a subsidiary of Hitachi Rail, specialises in the design, manufacture and maintenance of rail vehicles. Formed after the 2015 acquisition of AnsaldoBreda, the company blends more than a century of Italian rail expertise with Hitachi’s global innovation. Its headquarters are in Naples, with key production sites in Pistoia, Naples and Reggio Calabria.
The Pistoia facility serves as a major centre for train manufacturing and assembly. It produces a wide range of rolling stock—including high-speed trains, metro vehicles, trams and regional trains—for customers across the globe.
Rail Vehicles Being Weighed
The weighing project at Pistoia focused on trains from the Masaccio family. These include the Class HTR.312 (three-car units) and Class HTR.412 (four-car units).
Developed for Trenitalia, the “Blues” train is a next-generation regional train that combines battery and electric propulsion. It is designed to run on both electrified and non-electrified lines, helping reduce emissions while maintaining flexibility.
Our Weighing Solution
To support production, we delivered a Multi-Railcar Weighing System tailored to Hitachi Rail Italy’s requirements. This static system uses 10 Portable Train Weigher (PTW) units, allowing the full train to be weighed in a single operation.
The system’s user-friendly software displays real-time wheel weights for the entire vehicle on a single laptop. Wireless communication between the weighing location and the interface ensures seamless data collection.
Importantly, the system’s modular design gives Hitachi the flexibility to reconfigure the equipment for smaller train sets or future needs. This scalable approach provides long-term value for ongoing production and testing.
By providing accurate weight distribution data, our solution helps Hitachi Rail Italy meet rigorous safety, performance, and regulatory standards. It also plays a key role in supporting the efficient rollout of the “Blues” train—a significant advancement in sustainable regional transport.
